The EU tyre label explained

Rolling resistance, wet grip, noise: what the letters and symbols on the tyre label mean – and what really matters.

EU tyre label: new tyre with a product label on the workbench

Every new tyre sold in the EU carries a label. The current version (Regulation (EU) 2020/740) has applied since May 2021. It makes tyres comparable at a glance.

The three main values

ValueScaleWhat it means
Fuel efficiency (rolling resistance)A to EThe better the class, the less energy the tyre needs – saving fuel, or range in an electric car.
Wet gripA to EHow well the tyre brakes on wet roads. Between A and E there are noticeable metres of braking distance.
External rolling noiseA to C and dBHow loud the tyre is for its surroundings.

The additional symbols

  • Snowflake with mountain (Alpine symbol): the tyre meets the requirements for snow grip and may be used in wintry conditions.
  • Ice symbol: for tyres with special grip on ice, mainly intended for Scandinavia.
  • QR code: leads to the European product database EPREL with the full data sheet.

What really matters

The label is a good start, but it doesn't show everything: detailed snow behaviour, dry braking, wear and handling are missing. Our rule: wet grip first, then efficiency, then noise – all matched to your vehicle and the way you drive.

We're happy to explain the label values of the tyres that suit your car.
